Dr. Mejia has joined Steward Surgical Associates

Rockledge, Florida (September 6, 2023) –Rockledge Regional Medical Center, a Steward Family Hospital, is pleased to announce that José Mejia, MD., a board-certified general surgeon, who is fluent in English and Spanish with almost a quarter of a century of experience, has joined Steward Surgical Associates. Dr. Mejia is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons who provides expertise in general surgery, including areas such as hernia, gall bladder, and laparoscopic surgery. 

“Dr. Mejia will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to Rockledge Regional Medical Center,” said Tom Bowden, President of Rockledge Regional Medical Center. “The scope of his abilities compliments our current surgical team and allow us to provide high quality care more efficiently to the Brevard County community.” 

Dr. Mejia received his medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe, School of Medicine, in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He completed his residency in general surgery at Allegheny University Hospitals in Philadelphia, PA. After residency, he practiced in Altoona, PA for a few years before moving to Florida is 2001 and eventually settling in Brevard County in 2005. Most recently he practiced in Memphis, TN but is glad to be back on the Space Coast to serve the community where he lives. 

When he was in medical school doing rotations through the specialties 30 years ago, Dr. Mejia knew he found his passion when he rotated through general surgery. “General surgery allows me to work with my hands and ‘fix’ a problem for a patient,” explains Dr. Mejia as to why this area of medicine is fulfilling for him, even after twenty-five years.

Outside of the operating room Dr. Mejia enjoys golfing and exercising. He has been married for over 26 years and has two children in college. In addition, he has a passion for space and astronomy which is another reason he loves living and working on the Space Coast.
